History

Grace Baptist Church began in 1900. The city’s population had increased to 5,573 and a group of 15 people (4 families) felt that another Baptist Church in the southwestern part of the city was needed. Bartlette Street Baptist Church, later known as Washington Street Baptist Church and then as Grace Baptist Church, was an organized church by December 1900. The first of 3 Church Houses was on Bartlette Street, the second on the corner of Washington and Calhoun Streets, and the third and present facility at 219 West Calhoun Street. The name Grace Baptist was adopted in 1914, and the present facility was completed in February 1984. Our education building was completed in May 1992.

Music is a vital part of worship, and we have been blessed with many talented musicians over the years. Two of our young adult charter members, the Hughson sisters, were pianists and soloists, with one of them becoming our first music director. The first cantata is recorded to have been performed January 10, 1915, as it was not approved to take place prior to Christmas, and an overflow crowd attended! There continues to be a vibrant music ministry for all ages here in this house of worship.

We began the present daycare as a K5 program in 1964, which has been active continuously ever since. The levels of care and education have varied over the years, presently serving infants to 4K.

Our Historical Committee strives to continue to not only preserve our history but to also share that with you. Please call the church office if you would like to contact our committee, whether to ask questions or to add information to our collection.

Our goal remains the same as it was in 1900– to celebrate God’s grace and remember His blessings, and to share the gospel with others.
